Am I obligated?

Did your business own one or more half hourly electricity meters in the UK on 31 December 2008? If so you will be affected by the new carbon reduction commitment (CRC) regulations and will need, as a minimum, to register and possibly fully participate in the scheme on an ongoing basis, requiring a significant amount of administrative work.

What do I need to do?

As a minimum you will be required to register your business with the Environment Agency and if your business had an electricity consumption of over 6,000 megawatt hours in 2008 (approx. £500k) you will need to register as 'full participant'

Full participants will be required to submit data relating to all energy and fuel use and purchase allowances at the beginning of every compliance year. The Government will then re-distribute the funds used to purchase allowances distributed back amongst these organisations after the end of that year based on the energy efficiency measures undertaken.

What happens if I do not register?

Businesses that fail to register will be fined a minimum of £500. If you qualify as a full participant, the fines start at £5,000 and increase depending on the severity of the offence. The Enforcement Agents also have a list of all electricity meters from the qualification period and contact details for their owners.*
